A Word from Our President

Dear AFP Greater Detroit Member,

I’d like to take a moment to introduce myself as the new President of our AFP Chapter.  I have more than 25 years of experience working in fundraising both in New York/New Jersey and Detroit, currently as Executive Director of Reading Works.  I am a native Michigander and moved back in 2004 after 20 years out east.  What was the first thing I did when I decided to “come home?” I called the Greater Detroit AFP Chapter for advice and guidance.  A number of members reached out to me, and I was able to pick up my career without missing a beat.  I immediately volunteered for the Committee planning the annual National Philanthropy Day dinner, made lots of new friends and became part of this fantastic support system that is AFP.  I encourage you to seize full benefit of your membership.  If you are not on a committee – join one now!   There’s no secret handshake; there’s no one you have to “know” to get in – all are welcome.  If you are not yet a member of AFP, check out our new pricing schedule on our website – it’s never been easier or more affordable.   Use the contact information on this newsletter if you have any questions.

Ten Star  

2013 AFP Ten Star Award

The AFP Greater Detroit Chapter has proudly received the 2013 AFP Ten Star Award!

The Chapter completed 10 goals set forth by AFP International, such as:

  • The chapter met the deadline for the 2013 Chapter Leadership Form and completed the balance of the Accord process.
  • The chapter participated in the 2013 Chapter Treasury Gift Campaign for the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy.
  • The chapter held an organized event or activity in 2013 that either focused on or incorporated the importance of ethics and ethical fundraising.
  • The chapter conducted at least one event or activity in 2013 focused on new member recruitment or current member retention.

Every Member Campaign Committee:
Committee members will brainstorm ideas to promote the AFP Every Member Campaign to the membership and implement strategies to achieve our goal of 20% participation.

Sponsorship Committee:
The Sponsorship Committee is looking for you to help the chapter exceed its goals for 2014!  Help connect regional organizations to the chapter through a variety of sponsor opportunities.  To join and get involved, contact James Lewis at jlewis@dptv.org.

Marketing & Communications Committee:
The Marketing & Communications Committee is looking for a few additional members to help keep AFP Greater Detroit Chapter members informed and connected. National Philanthropy Day Committee:
If you like to interact with your fundraising colleagues as well as the greater SE Michigan community, consider joining the National Philanthropy Day (NPD) Committee!  We’re looking for chapter members to assist with the planning and execution of our annual observance of National Philanthropy Day, scheduled for
Wednesday, November 12, 2014, at the recently renovated Cobo Hall. To join, contact Liz Anderson at liz.anderson@afpdet.org.

AFP Mentorship Program

Are you new to the field of Fund Development?

Are you a seasoned professional looking to share your experience?

AFP can help!

Mentorship AFP is here to provide assistance and guidance for those who are just beginning their fundraising careers.

Participating mentees will be assigned to a fundraising professional who will serve as their personal mentor.

In addition to guidance, encouragement, and support from their mentor, mentees will be invited to participate in six interactive conference calls led by senior level fund development professionals.

These seminar-style teleconferences will include topics such as:

  • Annual Giving
  • Major Gifts
  • Making the Ask
  • Planned Giving
  • Special Events and more!

The cost of this program is a benefit of AFP Membership - there is no additional expense!

Marjorie S. Fisher Fellows Program

The Marjorie S. Fisher Fellows program (Fisher Fellows) strives to educate and empower the future generation of fundraisers in the region and is supported through the generosity of the Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Foundation Executive Director Fund of the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan.

Fisher Fellows will receive the following benefits over a one year period:

  • Membership in the Association of Fundraising Professionals Greater Detroit Chapter
  • Financial assistance to attend up to six chapter sponsored monthly programs
  • Inclusion in the Mentorship AFP program

A limited number of fellowships are available. For consideration applicants must be:

  • Currently employed in a fundraising capacity at a local non-profit organization located in the City of Detroit or serving a constituency in the city of Detroit
  • Age 30 or under, or if over the age of 30 have two years or less of professional fundraising experience
  • Not a current AFP member

Those working in small organizations with limited development support are encourged to apply.
